Pursuing a Passion: A Journey to Empowerment
As I stood on campus today, I felt the vibrant energy of my fellow students buzzing around me. In just a few days, I will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, and in August, I will begin my Master's in Social Work studies at Arizona State University. A mix of excitement and trepidation fills me as I embark on this new chapter in my life. At 44 years old, I may not be the typical graduate student, but my passion for social work and helping others has guided me on this journey.
My dream of becoming a clinical social worker stems from my desire to support those who have suffered from domestic violence. I aspire to empower victims, helping them heal from their traumatic experiences. One day, I envision opening the first all-male shelter for domestic violence victims, providing a safe space for them to share their stories and offering guidance on their path to recovery.
As I reflect on the road that has led me here, I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from family, friends, mentors and especially my husband who just asked me to go to prom with him. I am smiling really hard right now.
I am determined to use the knowledge and skills I gained from my years at UW Bothell. I will build upon them during my Master's program to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have been affected by domestic violence. Through my work, I hope to foster resilience and inspire hope in those who need it most.
In closing, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities I have been given and the people who have believed in me at UW Bothell. My journey to empowerment has been filled with hurdles, but it has also been filled with joy and growth. I have learned that age is no barrier to education, and that it is never too late to pursue one's passion. As I venture forward into this new phase of my life, I remain committed to my passion for empowering others and creating a more compassionate world. I am eager to embrace the challenges and the rewards that lie ahead, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to realizing my dream.
Yours sincerely, Florence Burrows
